Minnesota is also blessed with 6,564 natural rivers with the mighty Mississippi being the most notable. The plentiful waterways make sports fishing popular as lakes teem with sport fish, while streams offer a variety of trout. Located in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Region of the U.S., it is a state of western prairies under agricultural use, southeast deciduous forests cleared for farming, and the less populated North Woods where mining, forestry and tourism coexist. The state is noted for a diverse social and political orientation and considered to have one of the most highly literate populations. The climate is continental with cold winters and hot summers. Fully sixty percent of the state population resides in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area with smaller towns dotting the remainder of the state, known as Greater or Outstate Minnesota. From this expanse the state has created 72 state parks/recreation areas, 58 state forests and numerous wildlife preserves making it a place to enjoy outdoor recreation. The capital of the state is St. Paul in east central Minnesota beside the Mississippi River at the confluence of the Minnesota River.
