Randolph County is in Indiana. Northward, Hammond has recently passed Gary as the largest city on Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore along Lake Michigan. This lakeshore area stretches from Gary to Michigan City. Neighboring communities include the larger towns of Portage, Crown Point, Valparaiso and Michigan City. Griffith, Schererville and Merrillville abut Crown Point. Chesterton, Burns Harbor and Porter closer to the lake shore form the Duneland Area. Cedar Lake sits on a lake of the same name and yet is close to Lake Michigan. This region is influenced by proximity to Chicago and the popularity of Lake Michigan as a vacation spot. Further east is South Bend which is famously the home of Notre Dame University. Along with Elkhart and Mishawaka it forms a statistical region in the commonly known Michiana area. Outdoor recreation is supplied through its many parks, golf courses, botanical conservatories, East Race Waterway and Potawatomi Zoo. Fort Wayne close to the Ohio border is the cultural hub for Northeast Indiana and the state’s second largest city. It is home to many museums, art galleries, a philharmonic orchestra, minor league sports, children’s zoo, parks, and institutes of higher learning. Ft. Wayne International Airport services the area as does Greyhound and local bus service. To the southwest Muncie is home to Ball State University. It has miles of trails along the Cardinal and White River Greenways, a children’s museum, sportsplex, civic theater and symphony. Prairie Creek Reservoir and Campground provides acres of recreation both on and off the water as does the White River.
