Within an easy commute is rapidly growing Fredericksburg, VA. on the Rappahannock River. Moving south out of the busy D.C. suburbs we find the state capital, Richmond. Richmond is an historic city and was capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War. It is a socioeconomically and architecturally diverse city found at the fall line of the James River. Its location and government importance make it a transportation hub for rail, water and highway traffic. Richmond is home to Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond. It offers the amenities associated with an urban area such as varied dining, cultural venues featuring the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Ballet, NASCAR events, as well as a number of parks offering outdoor life. Neighborhoods are diverse and provide many housing options and prices. Growth lies to the north in Henrico County with suburbs like Glen Allen and to the south in Chesterfield County with towns such as Bon Air. More rural living is found in nearby Amelia County. Only 44 miles south of the capital is historic Williamsburg with its Colonial Williamsburg living museum. It is also home to the College of William and Mary. Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown form the Historic Triangle. Though rich in culture and history the population centers to the south in Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads or more correctly the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, VA-NC Metropolitan Statistical Area (VA-NC MSA), encompasses many small towns and the cities of Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, the largest city in Virginia. The port of Hampton Roads is ice free all year and has attracted a commercial and military presence including the Navy, Coast Guard, Air force, Army and NASA. It offers beachfront along the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay, as well as riverfront and lakefront property. Virginia Beach has become the state’s largest city by attracting tourism, retirees and others attracted to the sea and warm weather. It features miles of beach, many hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues associated with tourism. It also has 210 local parks for those wanting outdoor activities away from the bustle. The Navy’s strong presence leads many military to retire in the area. Newport News sits on the north shore of the James River and spreads to Newport News Point at the mouth of the Hampton Roads Harbor. It has long been associated with shipbuilding and home to the joint Air Force-Army base, Joint Base Langley- Eustis. There are many neighborhoods within the town limits and the town offers numerous parks and two boat ramps for waterman. Norfolk, the second largest city in the state, is considered to be the historic, cultural, financial and urban center in the VA-NC MSA. The city is home to the Norfolk Naval Base and a NATO Strategic Command base. It offers miles of waterfront property along the Chesapeake Bay in communities such as Willoughby Point and Ocean View. It also has gracious established neighborhoods such as Ghent, Downtown or Fairmount Park which are undergoing revitalization. Culture is represented by several performing arts groups, Virginia Opera, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, many museums and yearly festivals. If a quieter life is for you, Chesapeake, not far from Norfolk has waterfront property and is diverse, but has few urban areas. It sits on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and has much protected acreage including parts of the Great Dismal Swamp. Moving to the foothills and mountains of western Virginia is Roanoke named for the river flowing through town. The Appalachian Trail passes north of the city and the Blue Ridge Parkway passes to the south. Roanoke hosts many yearly festivals while nearby Smith Mountain Lake, Carvins Cove and Jefferson National Park provide outdoor activities. Valhalla Vineyards has introduced winemaking to the area. Nearby Salem is home to Roanoke College, with Hollins University in Roanoke County and Virginia Tech in nearby Montgomery County. Charlottesville, the home of the University of Virginia, is in the central part of the state. It is surrounded by the beautiful rolling farmland, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountains of Albemarle County. Charlottesville provides many activities such as cultural events, wine and beer tours, ballooning, hiking, festivals, an indie music scene, golfing and athletic events at the University. Virginia is rich in culture and history being “The Mother of Presidents” and scene of many Revolutionary and Civil War battles. It is served by several airports and rail service. Several major medical centers are located throughout the state.
