South Hadley is home to the first college for women in the U.S., Mount Holyoke College. The popular sports of basketball and volleyball were invented in Springfield and Holyoke, respectively. The Bay State’s coast is distinctly shaped thanks to several large bays, including Massachusetts Bay, where Boston is located at the mouth of the Charles River.
