Mississippi sits on the Gulf of Mexico, offering many opportunities for ocean, beach, and other waterfront properties. Though mostly coastal plain and lowland, Mississippi rises to the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains. The state is heavily forested. It is bound to the west by the mighty Mississippi River which brings water views, water sports and transportation possibilities.
The climate is humid sub-tropical, which means long summers and mild winters. Jackson, named after Andrew Jackson, is the capital and largest city. Jackson, MS is home to museums, many music venues, Celtic Festival, Crossroads Film Festival, U.S.A. International Ballet Competition and the Mississippi State Fair. The suburbs of Ridgeville and Madison sit near the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Madison has the highest state income level and was voted the second most livable town in Mississippi. Both towns offer upscale dining and shopping.
Across the reservoir are Brandon and Flowood. Clinton, MS, ten miles to the west of Jackson and listed in the top 100 places to live, has small town charm with a downtown featuring flower shops, antiques, art galleries and a marketplace. It also is home to Mississippi College.
Forty miles west of Jackson is the historic town of Vicksburg. At the confluence of the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers it was the scene of four Civil War battles and now features fine examples of antebellum architecture. Besides fine dining and shopping, Vicksburg has birding, duck hunting, golf, boating, fishing and hunting available.
Further to the south west lies Natchez. Listed in 2001 as one of the most livable small cities, it sits above the Mississippi River. It is the oldest city on the river. Beside small town charm Natchez also has casinos. Natchez is astride the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444 mile long scenic byway running through three states from Natchez to Nashville. It is among the 10 best biking trails in the country. Also found along the Natchez Trace Parkway are the towns of Port Gibson, French Camp, Kosciusko, Tishomingo and Raymond. The area also has hiking trails along the trace. The headquarter for the Natchez Trace Parkway is located in Tupelo. Tupelo, though famous as Elvis Presley’s birthplace, is a Civil war historic site. Being across the border from Memphis, TN, it serves as a commuter community. It has won an All-America City Award and is home to the award winning North Mississippi Medical Center.
Sixty-three miles south of Tupelo is the Golden Triangle made up of Columbus, Starkville and West Point. The area is serviced by the Golden Triangle Regional Airport. Columbus is home to Columbus Air Force Base, Baptist Memorial Hospital- Golden Triangle medical center and Mississippi University for Women and is the most active industrial city. Starkville is home to Mississippi State University.
Further southeast is Meridian home of two military facilities, Naval Air Station Meridian and Key Field. Meridian’s cultural scene has museums, theater and a symphony. The topography is a more rolling landscape and several lakes stud the area. Highland Park, Bonita Lakes and Okatibbee Lake bring swimming, tennis, baseball, softball, nature trails, golf, hiking, boating and playgrounds for your pleasure. Hattiesburg, in the center south of Mississippi, is popular for its diversity of industry, closeness to Camp Shelby (National Guard), public transportation and strong neighborhoods. It is home to University of Southern Mississippi.
Along the Gulf Coast three major towns hold sway – Biloxi, Gulfport and Pascagoula. Biloxi houses Keesler Air Force Base while Gulfport is home of the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet Seabees. Pascagoula is more heavily industrial with shipbuilding being foremost. Oil drilling operations also bring work to the area. Beaches, sports fishing and casinos bring in tourists.
Many people are drawn to the climate of Mississippi coupled with the fact the state has a cost of living 25% below the national average. Mississippi features 20 Certified Retirement Cities which lure retirees to the state. Two major airports, Jackson-Evers in Jacksonville and Gulfport-Biloxi on the Gulf, plus Amtrak service and public transportation make travel easier.
